Should I Get Varicose Vein Treatment While Pregnant?

Any mother knows that pregnancy can be full of bodily changes and functions. One of the common ailments pregnant women find themselves struggling with is varicose veins, which can be treated by a vein specialist. But, is it safe for pregnant women to undergo this treatment, or should they wait until after they’ve given birth?

What Causes Varicose Veins During Pregnancy?

To support your baby and have a healthy pregnancy, your body produces much more blood than it normally does. This can sometimes put too much pressure on your veins and valves since they are accustomed to only handle so much blood at a time. The increase in blood that develops during pregnancy can ultimately lead to the development of varicose veins.

Managing Your Symptoms

It’s best for women to wait until after they’ve had their baby to undergo any varicose vein treatment. There are a number of ways you can manage your varicose vein symptoms safely until your baby arrives:

  • Walk daily to get your blood flowing (unless your doctor says otherwise.)
  • Change your seated position often.
  • Elevate your legs.
  • Eat plenty of fiber.
  • Avoid tight stockings.
  • Watch your salt intake.
  • Wear flats instead of high heels.
