Can Age Play a Factor in Varicose Vein Treatment?

As we age, our bodies go through a lot of changes. For example, many people experience the unfortunate development of varicose veins as they age. Varicose veins are those unsightly, bulging veins that often appear on legs and feet. They’re usually blue or dark purple and can be quite painful.

Interestingly, age does seem to play a role in the development of varicose veins. This is because as we age, the one-way valves in our veins become weaker, leading to a reflux of blood. This pressure builds within the veins, resulting in twisted and bulging varicose veins.

Additionally, our skin becomes thinner and less elastic — which makes varicose veins more visible. It is more difficult for our veins to do their job properly, which can lead to the development of varicose veins.

So, does this mean that age is a factor in varicose vein treatment?

How Common Are Varicose Veins?

Studies show that roughly 20 percent of U.S. adults have varicose veins. Research also shows that if you have one parent with varicose veins, your risk of developing them goes up by 40 percent. If both your parents have them, your risk can rise to up to 90 percent.

Other common risk factors include:

  • Having been pregnant.
  • Being overweight.
  • Having a job that requires long hours standing.
  • Living a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Family history.

Common symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Aches and pain
  • Leg cramps
  • Heaviness, itching, and burning
  • Restless legs
  • Ankle swelling
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Throbbing skin
  • Changes in skin color
  • Skin ulcers

Treating Varicose Veins as You Age

Age can certainly play a role in the effectiveness of varicose vein treatments. This is because some treatments — such as laser therapy and sclerotherapy — work best on smaller, newer veins.

However, this doesn’t mean that you’re out of luck if you’re older and have varicose veins. There are still plenty of treatment options available, including surgery. If you’re older and have had varicose veins for many years, it’s important to speak with your vein specialist to find the right treatment option for you.
